What a great day!!  Temperatures were around 30 degrees plus and 7 athletes fought out 6 gruelling events:

  • Jay Hughes
  • Paul Wood
  • Lee Bowers
  • Wayne Tunstall
  • Alex Hunter
  • Paul Carter
  • Adam Townsend

all earned the right during the qualifiers to fight for the Title of Britain’s Most Powerful Man 2007.  We had World Champion Powerlifter Dave Mannering as referee, and a big thank you to him for a great job.  The athletes were competing not only for a great trophy and the honour of being Britain’s Most Powerful Man 2007, but also £1,000 cash as well.

The events for the Final were:

  • Incline Log 135kg – reps in 1 minute
  • 400kg Super Yoke – 25m
  • Car Deadlift - reps
  • Farmers Walk 150kg E/H for distance
  • Fire Engine Pull / Push – 50m
  • Atlas Stones 120kg,130kg,140kg,150kg,160kg,170kg onto oil drums

The first event was the 135kg Incline Log Lift.  Jay drew the unlucky straw of going first but he set a tempo that couldn't be caught with 12 reps;  Lee Bowers got 11 reps and Adam got 9.

The next event was the 400kg Yoke for 25m.  This proved quite challenging with only 3 athletes completing the entire 25m.  Paul Wood did it in 20.59, Jay 22.59, and Paul Carter in 29.62 seconds.

So after 2 events Jay was 1st with 13 points, 2nd was Lee Bowers with 10 points and Paul Carter was lying 3rd with 9points.

The third event was the Car Deadlift.  Jay won that as well with a very respectful 23 reps, Paul Wood got 19 reps and Adam got 18.  This was a really close contest with 2nd to 5th place separated by only 3 reps.  Lee was so unlucky that his strap broke when it did.

After 3 events Jay was building quite a lead with 20 points, Lee Bowers had 14 points in second place and Paul Wood was recovering after a bad first event with 13 points.

With things hotting up in the contest, and the weather too, we moved on to the Farmers Walk which was 150kg for maximum distance.  Jay won this event as well with 34.65 meters, Paul Carter made up some points after the Deadlift with 28.8m and Adam was third with 26.5m.  Wayne was unlucky that it was a freak of nature that he couldn't lift on the day, but ripped his hands and hurt his back trying, but as we all know sometimes it will not move, even if you have done it a million times before.

Jay was steaming away by this point with a staggering 27 points, Paul Wood, Lee and Adam were all joint 2nd on 17 points each.

Then came the Fire Engine Pull & Push.  The guys had to pull it 25 metres and then push it back 25 metres, bearing in mind the course is not totally flat and there are a couple of steep inclines.  Adam managed to win this one with a marvellous 42.25m, Jay got 41.70m and Alex was third with 41.65.  The top few were pretty close to each other, so with one event to go Jay had won it with an unmatchable 33 points, Adam was 2nd with 24 points and Paul Wood was third with 21 points,so it was down to the Stones to see who would finish second and third.

So to the final event of the Atlas Stones - 120kg, 130kg, 140kg, 150kg, 160kg, 170kg onto oil drums.  With tacky like grease, muscles and tendons broken, sweat glands that have given up because of over use -  after 5 events it was bloody marvellous and a sign of sheer grit and determination that any stones were loaded.

Adam went second to last and knew he had to beat or match Paul Wood's total of 6 in 46.84 to secure 2nd place.  He did just that with a time of 40.49 and won the event.  Paul Wood came 2nd and Jay come came third with 5 stones in 29.66, he could have got the last but got cramp.
